Mileage Pad - Track Business Mileage
By Pete Freitag
Over the last six months or so, I've been fitting in time here and there (a challenge with a 4 month old, a 2 year old, and a very busy consulting schedule) to work on the latest service from my company Foundeo Inc: Mileage Pad - Web & mobile app for tracking business mileage. While the site has been functional for a few months now, I haven't really put the word out until today.
MileagePad is an idea that people like to call scratching your own itch - I needed a better way to keep track of the mileage driven for business (driving to client meetings, the airport, etc), medical (reimbursement from a HSA / Health Savings Account) and charitable purposes.
Problem 1 - Keeping track of mileage too difficult
I often missed out on tracking mileage on shorter business trips because it was too much of a hassle to keep track of. A 10 mile trip can be reimbursed for $5.10 at the 2011 IRS standard business mileage rate, missing out on a lot of trips can add up quickly. I suspect I'm not the only person who was missing out on tracking mileage.
The mobile apps (I need beta testers, contact me!) help solve a big part of this problem (you don't need a pad and paper in your car, just your phone). MileagePad also gives you the ability to Repeat Trips. So if you make the same trip more than once, you can copy all the info and just put in a new date.
Problem 2 - IRS Standard Mileage Rates Change
The IRS standard mileage rates change from time to time, it's a pain to keep track of the current rates. MileagePad allows you to link a trip category to an IRS mileage rate (business, medical, charitable, moving). Then when you enter a new trip it will use the correct IRS mileage rate based on the date of the trip (so if you want to enter in your 2010 trips, it will use the 2010 IRS mileage rates.
Problem 3 - Reporting
There is still much room for improvement in MileagePad on the reporting side, but it does allow you to download crisp and professional PDF reports of your mileage.
I'm going to do another blog entry detailing all the technology used to build it, but one thing you can be sure of is that it runs on Adobe ColdFusion!
Go and Signup - I'm very much interested in hearing your feedback!
